This press release describes a partnership between EMI and last.fm in which EMI has launched ‘tuneglue-audiomap,’ an "extensive online music mapping mechanism which utilizes data from Last.fm to make focused and accurate music recommendations to music fans.".  As I write this, there doesn't seem to be any site beyond a holding page at http://audiomap.tuneglue.net/ so it looks like the press release is a bit premature. So there's nothing to report about the site yet.

Update: Hannes points me to http://clients.onyro.com/tuneglue/ to see tuneglue in action.  It appears to be a reworking of MusicMap with some nifty interface improvements and of course incorporating the last.fm similarity data.  Here's tuneglue in action:

It's a pretty cool way to browse through the world of music.  It is similar to MusicPlasma and Musicovery in that you have a visual way of exploring similar artists - it would be nice of tuneglue would let you listen to music like Musicovery does.

It is interesting to see one of the big labels  starting to work with last.fm.  It sure did take them long enough.

Comments:

Currently I can't even access the holding page, and Google hasn't cached it yet... were there any screenshots on the page?

For those who are interested in offering a similar soluiton - it seems you could get a good start using the following: 1. Flex object for the object map: - http://mark-shepherd.com/blog/springgraph-flex-component 2. Data that defines related artists - which you could generate from your own users/data, or you can also harvest data from Yahoo's music search API which provides similar artists for each artist your query for. MusicBrainz also has some similar artist data - but it's not in the Public Domain data, only the Creative Commons data export. 3. Process the data - using AggregateKnowlege.com - or the Taste engine linked on this blog a few days back. ========== This is something I'm considering for ArtistServer - except my focus is on providing indie artists with the ability to tag themselves with commercial artist names/bands - which should help people discover music they'll like based on bands they already enjoy. All these music discovery tools for commerical music are 'fun,' but it's usually just commercial music - which already gets radio play, press, hype, etc. There's so much great indie music out there that's usually harder to find - which makes indie music a perfect match for music discovery tools/apps. Thanks for the posts! Gideon
