I've been experimenting with deriving hierarchies from folksonomies.   I've been using the wonderful tag data from last.fm along with the search engine developed in the labs here that does all sorts of nifty things with similarity and clustering.  Here's a sample of a small section of a genre hierarchy generated automatically from the last.fm social tags.  (click the image to see a larger version).
