ExtremeTech has a head-to-head comparison of 8 music recommenders: MusicStrands, LivePlasma, UpTo11.net, Audiri, Pandora, Mercora, Yahoo LAUNCHcast Radio, and last.fm.  Not surprisingly, last.fm gets the nod. Here's what they say:

Last.fm is by far the best out there, possessing a huge library of music, a great community, and a recommendation feature that will blow you away. Last.fm pretty much sweeps our five main criteria.

Really? Why do you think that "not surprisingly", Last.fm got the nod? And what does that mean for those systems attempting a more content-based approach?

Jeremy: Not surprisingly, 'cause of all the social systems out there, last.fm does it the best (imho). There key advantage is the implicit ratings they get from the audioscrobbler plugin. Listeners don't have to manual rate songs, last.fm can just figure it out by watching what songs you listen to and what songs you skip. The only content-based system in this review was Pandora. Pandora has a much smaller catalog of music (no classical for instance) and virtually no exploration tools beyond their flash player. Try to quickly explore a subgenre like IDM to find a dozen new songs that you like, it is really hard with pandora, but you can do it with last.fm
