By now, most of you have probably seen the new Nike + iPod sport kit that lets you use your iPod nano as a multi-hundred dollar pedometer.  The feature that seems to be missing, that any MIR fan will be looking for, is the 'query by cadence' ... that is, having the iPod pick songs that match your pace.  When you are running up that long hill,  a slower song should be queued up, and when you are going down the other side, a much faster song should be played.  Or perhaps they should include a heart rate monitor too, so when you approach heart-attack territory, the iPod can start playing Roberta Flack or Norah Jones.  And the real question is, what happens when you wear your Nike/iPod sneakers with wireless transmitter to the airport?
Comments:

I'll bet the only thing holding them back from doing a cadence-based query is that the tracks in your iPod have no BPM information (unless you figure it out manually and type it in).

Say for example you were trudging up a long hill and your SportPod recognizes that you are traveling at 3 miles per hour (or whatever, I'm not a runner), what song should it play? "Chariots of Fire" by Vangelis? "It Keeps You Runnin'" by the Doobie Brothers?

Sure both of these would be perfect, but there needs to be some data element that says 3mph=<70bpm and then query through your library looking for songs tagged with that BPM range.

I believe iTunes has a spot in their field structure for BPM, but unless you tag that stuff manually, I don't know where BPM would come from.

It looks as if that feature is no longer missing: http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/25/apple-patents-workout-music-matching/
