Dressed for the mall

I used 'emo' as an example showing how songs labeled as 'emo' get associated with pictures labeled with 'emo' . One of the researchers asked 'What is Emo?' - so I gave a totally inadequate description of this musical genre. Now, if you really want to know what Emo is - then check out the site What the heck *is* emo, anyway? - it is a basic FAQ and primer on all things emo.  And there are lots of great emo photos on flickr.
Comments:

I always understood that it's original meaning - some post/pre punk american musical movement characterised by a slight teenage social misfit community vibe - has now been superceded by the more easily recognisable "kids with belts too heavy for their trousers". We have to sweep them up every Saturday round here.

I usually think of emo bands playing loud distorted guitars, like a whinier version of the D.C. Dischord bands - but Bright Eyes gets pegged as "emo" because Conor Oberst is whiny, but uses more acoustic guitars. I think the common thread here is "whiny" - or maybe "boys who keep diaries."
