MIR Technology goes mainstream
Here's a nifty video that shows some technology developed at BMAT is being used by Operación Triunfo (a Spanish reality/talent show similar to American Idol), to improve the singing of the contestants.

I know what BMAT can do. They have some very nice stuff. I am unsure about this program though. How does is it different from Karaoke Revolution, SingStar and Rockband?

Jon: I'm not sure how it differs... but I think Oscar might know, he reads this blog sometimes ... Oscar, can you enlighten us?

Well, actually I think I'm addicted :-)

Well, I'd say that the program (Operacion Triunfo) equals to the StarAcademy, American Idol, Latin American Idol, and the like.
Anyway, it's better explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operaci%C3%B3n_Triunfo
So, yes Jon, in the video the contests are practicing over a given melody (i.e. karaoke--like).
But, the software that BMAT has created evaluates a singer without any reference score (http://www.bmat.com/docs/skore_case-study.pdf).
This software was used to evaluate the candidates, via web. The site got around 5 millions of visitors in the first month. So, it was a big thing, here in Spain.
Cheers!

The biggest difference with this program is that it can score the voice regardless of what you sing or in what language you perform. It rates the singer based on notes, pitch and expression.
Check out these links to see how it gives a score to a singer:
