A while back I commented on how only a few of the Music 2.0 companies seem to be based in Silicon Valley.  Perhaps there's a reason for that.   In this Wired News Article, Last.fm founder Martin Stiksel says:

"If Last.fm would have started in Silicon Valley, it would already be very derivative and bland like most of the projects coming from (that) part of the world," said Martin Stiksel, co-founder of the social music service. "It's great to be here."

Comments:

Uh-oh. Is digital music blogging going the way of hip-hop? Looks like we are gonna have an East Coast vs West Coast rivalry. Does that make Stiksel Lady Sovereign? Doh! But seriously, I admire what Stiksel has done and his intentions. I would argue that San Francisco based Fine Tunes has a pretty cool player UI.

John Battelle, while writing the book 'The Search', asked Sergey Brin about music search. The response he got was that Google wouldn't do music search because Sergey does not like music. Welcome to Silicon Valley! :-)
